How has 2013 treated you so far? Before I start off with announcements for the new year, here's a roundup of 2012, which has been a great year in terms of ticking things off my to-do list.
☑ Started a Facebook page for this website (which I highly encourage you to join. c:).
☑ Attended my first ever Singapore Writers Festival.
☑ Went to a fabulous French film festival.
☑ Organised some bookish events.
☑ Went to a Harry Potter exhibition.
All fun, fun things. It's been a great year for fantasy and science fiction books too. Here are a few of my top picks.
If I'd known sci fi and space opera was like this, I would have picked it up much sooner.
A secret government organisation dedicated to funky, creepy stuff. That's just my thing.
TAC is a really entertaining read. It's not afraid to poke fun at itself or tear my expectations to shreds. Clarke caught me hook, line and sinker the moment she diffused a tense situation with an unexpected turn.
For all that I love the Cinderella aspects, and the futuristic re-imagining such as the pumpkin carriage and the prosthetic foot as the glass slipper, it was the Lunar dynamics and sci-fi elements unrelated to Cinderella that completely captured me.Fantastic books.
Now onto 2013. A couple of fun announcements:
LiyanaLand book reviews published in WAVES Lifestyle magazine.
I'm pleased to announce that LiyanaLand reviews will be published in WAVES Lifestyle magazine in both Singapore and Johor Bahru. The first couple of book reviews are out in the Jan-Feb 2013 edition. You can get the hardcopies (they're free!) at these areas, or read the magazine online.
I'm going to be at the All In! Young Writers Media Festival.
...as a panelist at the Writing for the Internet – Blogs & Online Publications panel. It's such an honour to be on the panel along with Aun Koh from Chubby Hubby; on 23rd February, we'll be talking about everything from writing, food and books. This wouldn't have happened without the Book Council Singapore's support, and of course all of you readers! There are some great workshops happening; you can get your tickets here. There's also a 55 Word Fiction competition organised by Prologue, so get your summarizing skills ready!
And here comes the inevitable hiatus announcement that is not so fun to make:
LiyanaLand will be on hiatus until June 2013.
This is a huge year for my university course, so I'll be taking some time to focus on exams and finals. All review requests will be replied to in June 2013. All books and assignments that have been accepted prior to this announcement will be reviewed/posted about throughout these six months.
Thanks once again for your support! I hope 2013 will treat you great.
